In October the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and an advisory committee to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommended a new, more effective shingles vaccine, Shingrix®, to protect adults ages 50+ from shingles and related complications. Experts agree that the vaccine is a breakthrough, with large international trials showing the vaccine to prevent more than 90 percent of shingles cases, even at older ages.
The Shingrix vaccine is administered in two doses, given 2-6 months apart.
The CDC advisory committee recommends that adults who have previously received the current shingles vaccine, Zostavax, also receive Shingrix.
RVNA now has Shingrix in stock, and will begin offering Shingrix on Monday, December 4, 2017. To make an appointment, please call us at 203-438-5555. Patients will need a prescription from their doctor in order to receive the vaccine from RVNA.
Insurance companies may or may not cover the cost of this vaccine. We recommend patients contact their insurance company to confirm that the vaccine is being covered. The cost of the vaccine if administered at RVNA is $205 per dose, for a total of $410. RVNA accepts checks and major credit cards. We will provide a receipt that can be submitted to insurance.
